The Pergamon Museum is one of the five museums that are situated on Museum Island. The Pergamon Museum is the newest, first opened in 1930. The Pergamon Museum was built to complement the nearby Bode Museum which had grown too small to house the artifacts garnered from German excavations throughout the world.

The idea for the museum came about around 1907 and its completion took a total of 20 years. Needless to say that it opened its doors during one of the most turbulent time in Germany’s history. Subsequently it was inevitable that the museum also took damage during the bombing of Berlin in World War II.

The Pergamon houses original sized, reconstructed monumental buildings such as the Pergamon Altar, the Market Gate of Miletus and the Ishtar Gate. All consisting of parts transported from the original excavation sites. Fortunately, many of the pieces had been stored elsewhere for safe keeping and a number of the museum’s larger pieces were walled in for protection.

The collections found in the Pergamon Museum are divided into separate and distinct sections. The museum is subdivided into the Antiquity Collection, the Middle East Museum and The Museum of Islamic art. With a total amount of 850,000 visitors visiting the museum each year, it is evident that if you want to partake in the exeprience then you have to arrange your stay at one of the many hotels in Berlijn. You must make your travel arrangements in advance in order to get your chance to fully experience Germany’s most visited art museum in recent memory.

You could ofcourse stay longer if you wish but then it is recommended to stay or rent appartementen Berlijn in order to cut down costs associated with prolonged hotel bookings.

Furthermore, The Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities is usually lauded as the most magnificent part of the museum. The Near East Museum is lauded as one of the largest and finest collections of antiquities from ancient Babylonia, Persia and Assyria. The Islamic Art Museum, focused mainly on the Middle East including Egypt and Iran, features the art of Islam from the eighth through the nineteenth centuries.

The future of the Pergamon Museum is in par with the main plan for the expansion of Museum Island. The Pergamon Museum will become the centre of the museum complex, connecting to The Neues Museum, Bodemuseum and Alte Nationalgalerie. Don’t let your accomodatie Berlijn come in the way of experiencing these magnificent collections of the world.
