Visitors to Oklahoma who want to learn more about the fascinating Western history behind the state would do well to visit the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. The Museum was erected in 1955 as a way to pay honor to the American cowboy as well as to educate visitors about the settlement of the state.
The Museum is located in Oklahoma City and contains a variety of different exhibits and displays that honor the Native American history of Oklahoma as well as the contributions of cowboys to the development of the state. Spanning more than 200,000 square feet, the museum is quite expansive and also contains numerous works of art, each linked in some way to the western culture of Oklahoma.
The Gallery of Fine American Firearms displays a variety of firearms that were commonly used in the west, including well known firearms manufactured by Sharps, Remington, Colt and more. Visitors will also have the opportunity to visit a prairie town reproduction at the museum. Some of the buildings in the town are even completely furnished and provide visitors with the ability to step back in time and see how early settlers lived.
