Brownsville Heritage Complex—Home of the Stillman House Museum - Brownsville, Texas
April 13, 2009 2:16 am North AmericaBrownsville is one of the old time towns in southern Texas, situated in the Rio Grande Valley where in 1850 a man by the name of Charles Stillman founded the community and built his house. Today the house is part of the Brownsville Heritage Complex where the history of the area is showcased to all that are interested in learning about the heritage of the community.
The Complex also is home to the Children’s Heritage and Cultural Learning Center which houses a small children’s library, small rotating exhibits and has hands-on artifacts for the kids to learn from about the history of the area. There is also a dress-up station where clothing from the era (or facsimiles of them) are waiting for the kids to try them on to see how it felt to be dressed as a child from the 1800’s.
For research there is the Heritage Resource Center which is filed with photographs, documents, textiles and objects to help students, scholars and the general public study local history. The entire collection is now available in digital format to facilitate the use and save the originals from the damage of being handled by so many people.
